Minding Our Mental and Physical Health During Covid-19

While COVID-19 is causing widespread disruption to daily life across the globe, and limited human movement remains vital to keeping us safe from the virus, we also need to be mindful of our mental, physical and occupational health during this time.

“Since mid-January when the impact of Coronavirus (COVID-19) started to emerge, we’ve seen a 10% increase in mental health claims across our Workers’ Compensation, CTP and government agency clients, as a primary or secondary condition. And we expect that number to substantially increase over the coming months,” says Marcella Romero, CEO of Rehab Management.

Identifying those in need
“Managing mental health is going to be an absolute priority in the coming months, not just for those who are employed but for the incredible numbers currently laid off.

“Another priority will be managing employees’ physical wellbeing following long periods of home stay and potential isolation. We need to ensure people keep up their physical fitness. Which is why a mechanism to identify those that may need support early is vital.”

Rehab Management’s recently launched program, CheckInToday, is designed to do just that. The program screens for mental wellbeing warning signs and uses a holistic approach to target individual health needs. With its focus on prevention, the aim is to identify individuals at risk of developing adverse health outcomes and offer interventions, thereby avoiding progression to illness.

Employers keep their finger on the pulse
“CheckInToday is a useful tool for employers to keep their finger on the pulse when it comes to employee wellbeing,” says Marcella. “This may be particularly useful to mitigate the risk of ongoing social isolation, anxiety or panic induced by the current circumstances.”

The program targets a range of wellbeing domains, including physical, mental, social, lifestyle, work and study. For example, a participant might benefit most from psychological support, or a tailored physical exercise program, or coaching to set daily goals. Based on an individual’s results, a Rehab Management health consultant will design a program suited to their needs, which is delivered through a mix of personal consultations and a digital platform.

CheckInToday is an innovative, highly engaging program designed to proactively manage individuals with particular wellbeing risk, using a combination of interactive tools and expert services.

Participants feel better and more confident
Latest program data indicates an average 30% increase in wellbeing from initial screening to course completion, delivering a significant improvement for participants with a relatively low investment. Exit survey data also indicates participants feel more confident about self managing their health and wellbeing based on learning and actions implemented during the program.
