What is Ergonomics?
Ergonomics is about designing the work environment for optimal human use. This includes safe working in both white and blue-collar environments.
The work environment includes both the immediate physical environment and greater workplace environment. The immediate environment is the equipment or tools an employee uses on a daily basis. The greater environment is the overall structure of the workplace; examples include lighting, heating and flooring.
What Are The Risks of Bad Ergonomics?
Ergonomic risk factors differ, depending on the type of work. For example, an office worker’s fingers, wrists and arms can be affected by bad placement of the mouse, keyboard and chair. Whereas a factory worker may be vulnerable to back and neck injuries due to twisting at the waist and lifting heavy objects.
What Is An Ergonomic Assessment?
A good ergonomic assessment involves not only looking at your employees’ seating arrangements, but also their behaviours such as how often they stand, their posture, equipment (including computers, keyboards, and machinery) use and working environment.
