Honouring Service Through Care – Supporting Veterans and Military Personnel Beyond Commemoration

Symbols of commemoration hold deep meaning for current and former members of the Defence Force, their families and the broader community. Seen at dawn services, memorials and ceremonies throughout the year, these symbols invite reflection, remembrance and gratitude. They also remind us that supporting those who have served is not confined to a single day, but is an ongoing responsibility shared by the whole community.

At Rehab Management, we are proud to support serving military personnel and veterans across Australia. Our work is guided by the same values reflected in these enduring symbols of commemoration – respect, service and care for those who have given so much.

Symbols that honour sacrifice and service

Symbols of commemoration are used during Anzac Day and Remembrance Day services, military funerals and other solemn events. Each symbol carries particular significance, helping Australians remember those who have served in wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations, and recognise the impact of service across generations.

The red poppy is one of the most widely recognised symbols. Worn at commemorative services, it represents remembrance and respect for those who have died in service. Originally inspired by the poppies that grew on the battlefields of the Western Front, it has become a powerful reminder of the human cost of conflict and the importance of ongoing remembrance.

Rosemary is another enduring symbol, traditionally worn at Anzac Day services. Associated with memory and remembrance, rosemary grows wild on the Gallipoli peninsula and has become a uniquely Australian emblem of honouring those who served there and beyond.

Medals worn by veterans during commemorative events are official symbols of service. Each one tells the story of where someone served and the experiences they carried with them. Seeing medals worn with pride and respect reminds us that military service does not end with discharge – it remains a part of a person’s identity throughout their life.

Other familiar symbols, such as wreathshonour rollswar memorials and the minute’s silence, create moments of shared reflection. Together, they help Australians recognise not only those who died in service, but all who served, and the lasting physical, psychological and social impact of military life.

From remembrance to meaningful support

While symbols of commemoration encourage reflection, they also prompt an important question – how do we continue to support veterans once the ceremonies conclude?

Transitioning from military to civilian life can bring complex challenges. Some veterans experience physical injuries, psychological trauma or long-term health conditions linked to their service. Others may face barriers to employment, meaningful participation or connection within their communities.

Rehab Management is committed to walking alongside veterans and military personnel during these transitions. Our services are designed to support recovery, capability and independence, recognising that every individual’s experience of service is unique.

Veteran-focused rehabilitation at Rehab Management

Our teams work alongside veterans to deliver rehabilitation programs that are practical, respectful, and outcomes‑focused. Our work is grounded in an understanding of the unique and lasting impacts of military service, including service‑related injury or illness.

We are committed to:

  • Supporting both physical and psychological recovery
  • Empowering individuals to rebuild confidence, capability, and independence
  • Facilitating a safe and sustainable return to work, or engagement in meaningful activity

Keeping the spirit of remembrance alive

Symbols of commemoration help ensure that Australia never forgets those who served. They also remind us that remembrance should extend beyond words and ceremonies into real, tangible support.

At Rehab Management, we believe that honouring service means supporting veterans not just in memory, but in everyday life – through access to rehabilitation, meaningful work and the opportunity to thrive beyond service.

As we reflect during moments of commemoration, we remain committed year-round to empowering veterans and military personnel to move forward with strength, dignity and purpose.
