Exercise Right Week | 23-29 May 2022

Exercise Right Week is an annual campaign powered by Exercise & Sports Science Australia (ESSA). The week takes place from 23rd-29th of May aiming to encourage all Australians to be more active and to know where to get the *right* advice when it comes to moving more.

This Exercise Right Week, we spoke with Rehab Management staff and asked for their thoughts on what this week means to them, the right amount of exercise and best ways to stay active and safe during and after COVID-19?

What does Exercising right mean to you?

“For me, exercising right means applying the right amount of stress to my body so that I can be get stronger and fitter without getting injured. I find that when I exercise regularly, I surf well and when I surf well, everything is ok.” – Hugo Miller

“Exercising right to me is all about consistency and frequency. Too often people get caught in a yoyo of exercising at 150% and then they fall off the band wagon shortly after.” – Brennan Smith

How much exercise is the right amount for an individual?

The amount of exercise you need depends on your reasons for exercising, on your starting point, and on how quickly you want to achieve your goals. And the type of exercise you choose depends on your personal abilities and preferences, on your schedule, and on the facilities at your disposal. Our staff recommend.

“2-4 hours per week of moderate intensity exercise such as walking or 1.5 -2 hours per week of high-intensity exercise. I like to recommend a good mix of aerobic and strength-based exercises, even if it is just 30-60 minutes per week of your favourite HIIT exercise video on YouTube or via other modes such as Strava or the Nike Trainer app.” – Brennan Smith

“Find the right balance, any exercise that you can do consistently. Don’t be afraid to have a rest day, just be sure not to let everyday become a rest day.” – Hugo Miller

Exercising right during or post-Covid.

With Covid still lurking around. We also asked our team what are ways that can help individuals stay active and safe during and after COVID-19?

“At the height of lockdown, as old as it may make me sound, I looked forward to my daily walk around my local park. Developing your fitness and health will strengthen your immune system and make you less susceptible to COVID-19” – Hugo Miller

“Ultimately, I recommend a consistent schedule and repetition. Many people say they don’t have time to exercise but the truth is it is estimated that Australian’s spend 144 minutes per day on the couch and watching TV, whilst it only takes 30 minutes per day to stay healthy and minimise your risk of multiple cardiovascular, metabolic, pulmonary and psychological conditions.

I like to use exercise to separate, my work from my home life. It is a fantastic way to unwind and mean I can spend more quality time with my partner without thinking about work.” – Brennan Smith
