How to Boost Staff Morale During Coronavirus (COVID-19)

High staff morale is vital to a company’s success. Employees with a positive outlook are more productive, engaged, and dedicated to helping their company succeed. But with all the uncertainty in the world right now, it may be hard for some employers to maintain levels of staff morale and employee engagement – here are some tips that may help.

Open communication – Effective communication is critical during times of crisis. Keep staff updated with regular emails highlighting any important issues, process or policy changes they need to be aware of. Employers should also consider implementing weekly team meetings via conference call or video conferencing to discuss their plans and any concerns employees may have. Meeting regularly with individual staff members will also increase morale and make employees feel valued.

Be flexible – All employee needs are different. Some staff may live with someone with a compromised immune system and may be worried about infecting them with Coronavirus. In contrast, others may live alone and be eager to return to have some form of social interaction. Providing employees with a choice between working from home or returning to the workplace will demonstrate a level of trust, strengthen workplace relationships, and increase engagement levels.

Support mental health – Some people have adapted well to the recent changes in the world, whereas many others are struggling. Listening to employees and taking the time to understand their needs will encourage them to open up and ask for help if they need it. Employees who feel supported will be more loyal, committed, and passionate. They will respect their employers and work tirelessly to help them achieve their goals.

Host team-building events – Feeling isolated can have a detrimental effect on the workplace. Making time to form social bonds and build trust not only combats loneliness, but it also helps build relationships. Virtual team building comes in many forms including morning coffee chats, online book clubs, company contests and Friday afternoon drinks. It is the perfect way to help employees stay connected and boost staff morale.

Reward achievements – Right now it’s more important than ever to recognise and reward employees who are making significant contributions or delivering beyond expectations. Acknowledging staff achievements reassures employees that their work is valued and that they are an essential part of the company. A weekly email circulated to employees highlighting their achievements will lift their spirits and brighten their day.

In times of crisis, it’s easy to overlook certain things. But encouraging a healthy office culture is one of the most important aspects of running a successful business and is something that should not be ignored. Listening to employees and supporting their needs will go a long way towards building a happy and healthy workplace that continues to thrive in years to come.
