Can EAP help with anxiety and depression?

Yes. EAP can support employees experiencing symptoms of anxiety, low mood or depression, especially when those concerns are affecting wellbeing, work performance, confidence, attendance or relationships.

EAP counselling is usually short-term and solution-focused. It is not a replacement for emergency care or long-term clinical treatment, but it can be an important first step in accessing support.

Some common reasons employees may seek support

  • Persistent worry, panic or feeling on edge
  • Low mood, sadness or loss of motivation
  • Difficulty sleeping or fatigue
  • Reduced concentration or confidence
  • Work-related anxiety or performance pressure
  • Emotional overwhelm
  • Relationship or family stress affecting work
  • Avoidance of work tasks, conversations or attendance

Some employees may not have a diagnosis. They may simply know that something feels harder than usual. EAP can help them talk it through early.

When more support may be needed

Some employees may need support beyond short-term EAP counselling. This may include seeing a GP, psychologist, psychiatrist or other health professional, particularly if symptoms are severe, ongoing or affecting safety.

If someone is at immediate risk of harm, they should contact emergency services or a crisis support service straight away. EAP is valuable support, but it is not an emergency response service. EAP can support employees to access community-based care networks when longer-term counselling or supports are required, for example, their EAP counsellor will support them to speak to their GP to access a Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP) and local Psychologist.

How employers can support employees

Employers do not need to diagnose or solve an employee’s mental health concerns. A practical role is to provide clear access to EAP, create a safe culture around help-seeking and make sure managers know how to refer employees appropriately.

A well-communicated EAP can reduce barriers to early support and help employees feel more comfortable accessing help.
