A Day in the Life of Sam

This week we had the pleasure of interviewing one of our occupational therapists, Sam Taylor, who plays a vital role in helping clients regain their independence and transition back to work.

Based in Townsville, Sam brings a unique energy, not only through his expertise but also from his passion for performing in musicals outside of work.

Sam arrives at the office around 8 a.m., ready to start his day. His mornings usually begin with reviewing emails that came in overnight. “I like to get organised early and schedule my day accordingly based on what needs to be done,” Sam shares.

This often includes reaching out to case managers, employers, host employers, and other allied health professionals to coordinate client care. His proactive communication ensures that all parties involved are on the same page, providing clients with the support they need for a successful return to work.

After planning, Sam jumps into making phone calls to clients and stakeholders. These conversations play a critical role in understanding his clients’ progress, challenges, and needs. Sam works closely with veterans and insurance clients, helping them transition into civilian life or return to the workforce.

His passion to help others is what drew him to this field: “I wanted to be able to offer my expertise and knowledge in certain areas to support clients through their recovery.”

By midday, Sam typically breaks for lunch, before tackling the second half of his day. Afternoons may involve more phone consultations, as well as face-to-face assessments, which allow him to evaluate clients’ physical and mental readiness for returning to work.

When reflecting on a time he made a significant impact in someone’s life, one case that stands out to Sam is helping a woman successfully return to her role as a flight attendant. “It was a complex case with several parties involved, but through persistence and clear communication, we got her back to work after four months on alternate duties, ” he reflects. Success stories like this are what make the job rewarding for Sam.

What Sam enjoys most about his role at Rehab Management is the diversity and the wide range of people he encounters. Each day brings something new, and every client presents unique challenges and rewards. “I love the variety and the different types of people I get to help along the way,” Sam shares.

For him, the most fulfilling part is seeing clients regain their ability to do what they love, whether it’s returning to work or other meaningful aspects of their lives.
